A brief review of Larry Brom's latest rules set - "Disperse, Ye Damned Rebels"
 - 12 September 2004, Mike Taber -

Recently received are Larry Brom’s new AWI rules - "Disperse, Ye Damned Rebels" (DYDR) a playable set of, recreational rules to fight larger battles of the American Revolution. Published by “And That’s the Way it Was”. These rules are based on Larry’s standard rules which he has used as the basis for some of his other sets, such as A Glint of Bayonets (ACW) and "Chassepot and Needlegun" (FPW).

The basic maneuver unit is the infantry regiment/battalion, cavalry regiment, or artillery battery. DYDR uses a figure ratio of 1:15 - Infantry is based two (2) figures per 2" x 1" base. This represents a 30 man company; with eight (8) to ten (10) bases per battalion.

Sequence of play is; Command Response, Movement, Stationery Firing, Moving [units] firing, completion of Charge, and Close Combat.

Morale is checked after each type of fire combat. Also checked to complete or stand and take a charge, and after close combat.

Firing is by base (8 per infantry and 3 per battery). The Combat system used is quite simple; it matches base to base with a modified die roll per base. Combat continues until one side or the other has had all of its stands defeated.

Morale is graded by unit type and experience. The part that I really like is that a unit’s morale level is not known until the first time it is required to check Morale.

If you want a set of rules that will give you a good (yet simple) representation of [18th century] linear tactics, this will prove to be a quite satisfying set of rules. At $13.00 (USD) you can’t go wrong.

Napoleonic fans may also find the rules: "To the Sound of the Guns" of interest – also published by “And That’s the Way it Was” and based on the “Brom Standard Rules”.
